Wayne Quilliam

Wayne Quilliam Resume 2009
Indigenous artist Wayne Quilliam is this years winner of the NAIDOC ‘Artist of the Year’ Award. He also launched three exhibitions, ‘Gatherings’ at the National Museum, Paringa Gallery in Melbourne and at Garma in the Northern Territory in 2009.
He was the official photographer for the Australian Governments apology and developed the ‘Ngarpin’ or ‘Sorry’ series of photographs that drew record crowds to the Koori Heritage Trust in Melbourne. The exhibition then opened at the Melbourne City Town Hall followed by the Incinerator Gallery and Manningham Gallery. On the first anniversary of this historic event Wayne developed and curated ‘Sorry – more than a word’ exhibition that was opened by the Prime Minister at the National Parliament House and is now on display at the Aboriginal Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies. Wayne won the 2008 Human rights award for his work with the National Aboriginal newspaper Koori Mail and was a finalist in the prestigious Walkley Awards for photojournalism.
He opened his European tour that included 80 images of Indigenous celebrations and exhibited in France, Italy, Spain and Germany. Many of these images have been included in permanent collections throughout Europe and in public displays until 2010.
Wayne has recently returned from Europe with two show’s, one at Art Centre Berlin, Germany opened by the Australian Ambassador. ‘Lowanna Emergence’ was opened by the European Union Ambassador at the Museum of Young Art in Vienna, Austria in July as a part of the ‘Global Art’ series. The work is now in Cologne, Germany and will feature at the 2009 International Photographic Biennale in Australia in September.
Wayne co-created a 1920’s New York photographic shoot with Russell Crowe and was the art ambassador for Silverchair/Powderfinger ‘Across the Great Divide Tour’, his images were used on stage to encourage Australian youth to participate in the ‘Reconcile’ project.
