Wayne
Quilliam Resume 2009
Indigenous artist Wayne Quilliam
is this years winner of the
NAIDOC ‘Artist of the Year’
Award. He also launched three
exhibitions, ‘Gatherings’ at
the National Museum, Paringa
Gallery in Melbourne and at
Garma in the Northern Territory
in 2009.
He was the official photographer
for the Australian Governments
apology and developed the ‘Ngarpin’
or ‘Sorry’ series of photographs
that drew record crowds to the
Koori Heritage Trust in Melbourne.
The exhibition then opened at
the Melbourne City Town Hall
followed by the Incinerator
Gallery and Manningham Gallery.
On the first anniversary of
this historic event Wayne developed
and curated ‘Sorry – more than
a word’ exhibition that was
opened by the Prime Minister
at the National Parliament House
and is now on display at the
Aboriginal Institute of Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander Studies.
Wayne won the 2008 Human rights
award for his work with the
National Aboriginal newspaper
Koori Mail and was a finalist
in the prestigious Walkley Awards
for photojournalism.
He opened his European tour
that included 80 images of Indigenous
celebrations and exhibited in
France, Italy, Spain and Germany.
Many of these images have been
included in permanent collections
throughout Europe and in public
displays until 2010.
Wayne has recently returned
from Europe with two show’s,
one at Art Centre Berlin, Germany
opened by the Australian Ambassador.
‘Lowanna Emergence’ was opened
by the European Union Ambassador
at the Museum of Young Art in
Vienna, Austria in July as a
part of the ‘Global Art’ series.
The work is now in Cologne,
Germany and will feature at
the 2009 International Photographic
Biennale in Australia in September.
Wayne co-created a 1920’s New
York photographic shoot with
Russell Crowe and was the art
ambassador for Silverchair/Powderfinger
‘Across the Great Divide Tour’,
his images were used on stage
to encourage Australian youth
to participate in the ‘Reconcile’
project.
